GPS (Global Positioning System)

The Global Positioning System (official name is NAVSTAR-GPS) is a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) developed by the United States Department of Defense. It uses Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, that enable GPS receivers to determine their current location, the time, and their velocity.

A predecessor of the BeanCounter GIS has been operational and used as early as 1992 by our partner BSI (Bureau de Service et d'Ingénierie) in Lausanne. It guides fire trucks battling forest fires in the Provence region in France.

The BeanCounter GIS displays information from objects equipped with GPS receivers and signal transponder on street plans, maps or satellite images. Additional information of any displayed object can be retrieved by simply clicking the object on the map. Object display can be enhanced through conditional display, i.e. display as a function of object attributes. Display primitives are points, lines and zones.
